WIPorn & KUPorn

It all started as a way to allow myself to embark on the journey that is kitting up & stitching a Chatêlaine. It is so expensive and long-term I always knew I wouldn’t allow myself to spend that much on a single project unless I was able to stitch it within a proper time-frame and with a clear mind (and therefore schedule).

It’s simply not me to invest so much money in something without making that money return its value. Think of the hand dyed skeins I use for endless numbers of projects: I spend x euro for one skein and I expect to gain xˣ 😉 exponential “profits” from that “investment”. That’s how I like to look at my stash, as an investment that will at some point deliver, but we’re all different – I’m not saying my look on these things is the best, it’s just what comes as a natural approach for me. Simply put, I don’t do cheap, I do long-term. 😜

Now, because a Chatêlaine has always instigated thoughts like oh I so want to have one of those hanging on my walls, I knew it wouldn’t happen unless I managed to cross off all my oldie WIPsies from the list – which if you’re a long-time reader of this blog you already know was The Reason why I started it in the first place: to get things D.O.N.E. 😀

Of course with blog reading and SALs and mysteries (which you should have guessed by now are some of my weaknesses) this hasn’t really happened, on the contrary I’ve been stashing LOTS and LOTS of charts, kitted up LOTS and LOTS of these and never got around to start any because of a tremendous list of ongoing projects, with new starts that flooded that list instead of allowing me suck it dry.

For 2016 I’ve decided to try something different, of better said, starting last summer I decided to try something different: I have been working solely on WIPs and KUPs (that is Kitted Up Projects) that allowed me to use up lots of stash and cross a number of items off the infamous list.

And because KUPs are already kitted up, but they also let me get that new start fix, I managed to keep a decent balance between fresh starts, stash usage and finishes (in some cases full finishes, my favourite kind 😀 ).

Now, how many bullets are on this list? I think you’re wondering, well, A LOT. Some are almost done, some are barely started, some are small, some are a tad more demanding, the majority’s on linen, a few are still on Aida..

The idea is to attack everything that is a WIP first and then move on to KUPs, and then – at last, I’ll be able to open the boxes I keep my patterns in and decide what projects I want to work on that year – imagine that! free sets of dowels, free key rings, free skeins that are not borrowed from this project or that project.. and the ultimate satisfaction with myself because I’d know those skeletons in the cupboard don’t hunt me anymore. AH! 😀👻

At this point I reckon you’re ready for the big one, The List 😉

pins 📍 mark all the projects that have been already started, so as you can see the majority of these are KUPs. does it make it look better? not so sure.. 😉

alien faces 👽 mark the possibly UFOs I’m not so keen on picking up again because of the Aida issue.. we’ll see how/when I manage to persuade myself 😉

– – –

considering how long this list is, I might be forgetting some other KUPs but definitely no WIPs – and it’s been such a tremendous addiction, starting or planning on starting things, that I sort of began to look at this as a WIPorn and KUPorn obsession 😜 – and that’s where you get the sassy name for this monstrous task. [want to know another -porn, actually threadporn obsessed needleworker? that would be Amanda, she’s the one that started linking porn to these weird habits us stitchers have 😀 ]

WIPorn & KUPorn will be the challenge for 2016 and definitely a few more years, I’m not sure for how long I’ll be able to stick to this and how many exceptions I’ll allow myself (for instance I already know I’ll add some FPS & smalls along the way), but the general idea is to devote my stitching time to WIPs and KUPs (preferably in this order) and stop starting whatever, whenever. I have SO many other projects I want to enjoy but starting them doesn’t feel like fun at all when there’s SO much time and money invested in these – plus it’s not as if I don’t like these anymore. I have a bit of a problem with stuff that is on Aida, I’ll admit it, but out of all projects (and we’re talking around 60), only three are going to stay on Aida, which is not that bad, just 1/20! 😜

I’ve been thinking about this all summer, perhaps all year if I’m being really honest, and with time it became much more than a (giant) step to be taken before embarking on a Chatêlaine adventure – it’s more like a challenge with myself, to see if I can make good use of all this time and cash like I do with every expensive (and not expensive) skein I buy.

– – –

so here it is, my plan for the years to come 😀

I’ll update this page every time I come across some KUP that missed The List, and of course every time I finish one of these. if you’re familiar with at least some of them you know it’s not that impossible to cross them off in a couple of years, especially since they’re not massive or incredibly difficult – they’re “just” many. 😀

  1. That seems to buy a super duper list!! i haven’t seen the new 2016 SAL from TFPS 😦 won’t you join it? It will be my first!! so excited!

  2. ooohh now I got it! I saw coffeestitcher’s project but didn’t notice the #chateleine . Now that I know, I will stay away from it, especially because is beyond my skills 😛

    1. on all honesty, skills or not (and from what I hear they are not as tricky as one thinks, “just” very long and elaborate) I’m not even sure I’ll stitch more than one in my life. it’s one of those milestone things that I’d really like to try and accomplish but I have the feeling there’s too little room for your own input – and you know that’s not my cup of tea. not yo mention the count 😱 I like tiny stitches 😉

  3. Well, I have to say, your list blows away any that I have, by a lot 🙂 But don’t let a list hold you back from the addiction of Chatelaines; I am planning to start another on January 1st, so I will have 4 in my rotation 🙂 And my big Christmas gift this year from DH is a complete kit from ECC for another – I’ve always kitted the big ones up myself, stalking sales for everything; not this time, even though it’s expensive from ECC – it’s cheaper by far than the camera lenses I have gotten the last couple of years 🙂
START ONE, START ONE, START ONE 🙂

    1. oh, trust the one that compiled the list: it’s way less demanding than it seems. sure, there are A GREAT DEAL of projects, but those that I started are 99% of the times halfway through, and 99% of the ones I haven’t started are VERY small. no L&U for me yet 😉
I’m glad you’ll get some Chat galore this Christmas, it’s going to be so nice to watch them grow! to be honest I’m restraining myself from starting any because of the list; it’s more along the lines: I basically own a small needlework shop in stash and I REALLY REALLY want to start some of the things I already own, pick out stuff for each year, kit up slowly what requires a bit of an investment, etc. and if the Chat sparkle lights up again I’ll be joining the club in a sec, but for now I really want to decapitate this hydra of a list 😜

  4. What a great idea. I’m doing a similar thing with my GG list trying to get that down to manageable proportions.
I did wonder about setting up a Go Fund Me for a Chatelaine LOL

    1. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I like your take on it: manageable proportions. 🙌🏻❤️😜
if by the time I’m working my way through my small home based shop I feel like spending money like water again I might, slowly, kit up a Chat – at a snail pace! 😂
